If you’re looking for a short yet breath taking hike on Oʻahu, you’ll fall in love with the Lanikai Pillbox Trail on the island’s Windward (east) side.
Among Oʻahu’s many World War II “pillbox hikes,” this one is the most famous—and for good reason. The panoramic views are simply unforgettable.
Trail Overview
This is a short trail offering a 360° view of the turquoise ocean and lush mountains, with a touch of WWII history. If you can only choose one hike on Oʻahu, this is the must-do.
- Trailhead: Located in the residential area of Lanikai (Ka‘elepulu Drive).
- Parking: No parking at the trailhead. Park at Kailua Beach Park boat ramp and walk about 0.5 mile to the start.

Route
- The initial slope is steep, following a fence line up to the ridge.
- From the trailhead to the first pillbox and back is roughly 1 mile round trip.
- Continue to the second pillbox for about 1.5 miles round trip.
Time: Around 1 hour round trip, though you’ll need to use your hands in some spots. The first section is the steepest.
Tips:
- Most hikers stop at the first pillbox, but the second pillbox rewards you with even better views.
- The trail is more rugged than Diamond Head; expect some overgrown grass and rocks.
- It faces east, so sunrise is popular, but avoid hiking in complete darkness.
- Go early to beat the heat—or late afternoon for the most vivid colors.
Bonus: Pack flip-flops and a towel so you can cool off at Lanikai Beach afterward—its crystal-blue waters are the perfect reward.
