Diamond Head is probably the most famous hiking trail on Oʻahu—partly because it’s so easy to reach, but even more for its breathtaking scenery. This is a relatively gentle uphill trek compared to the big reward: just about 30–40 minutes to the summit, where you’ll enjoy a panoramic view of Waikīkī and Honolulu.
Trail Experience
The trail is clearly marked, well-maintained, and popular, with almost no hazards.
The most exciting part is the short tunnel near the top (only about 30 seconds to walk through), followed by the stairs. After the tunnel, you have two choices:
- Turn right: climb the biggest staircase you’ve ever seen
- Turn left: another staircase, but with gentler steps.
Both paths form a complete loop. Most visitors go up and down the same way, but if you want the full “loop experience,” you can descend the giant staircase via the pillbox (concrete bunker) and a spiral iron staircase.
Good to Know
Reservations: Due to high visitor numbers, you must book tickets in advance (up to 30 days). Two ticket types: entry only or entry + parking.
Time slots:
- Entry + parking: book a 2-hour slot (6–8 AM, 8–10 AM, …) and arrive within the first 30 minutes of your slot.
- Entry only: book a 1-hour slot starting from 6 AM.
Ticket prices: $5 per person (walking, Uber, or driving) + $10 per vehicle.
If you take the bus or trolley or park in a free area, you’ll have a long walk to the trailhead. Uber/Lyft will drop you right at the parking lot. Either way, you still need a reservation.
Tip: Book an early time—the trail offers little shade.
